When painting my Southwestern pieces with the Native American figures, I would start painting on a black canvas, usually with no drawing or planning. I would let the face emerge and then I would lightly sketch in the hair, robe, feathers, and any extraneous elements.


For the piece below,  a collector sent me a family photo and asked me to paint them as the figures from my "Begay Series." Because he wanted to see the process I used, I photographed the progress of the painting at various stages.
